Bristlenose Plecos are excellent for eating diatom algae and a wide range of other nuisance algae. They are particularly helpful during the early stages of a tank's development when algae growth is at its peak. While they keep the glass relatively clean, you will still need to step in and wipe it down yourself every now and then.<\/p>
These plecos are best at cleaning algae off rocks and wood. They actually prefer having wood in their tank because they consume small amounts of it to aid their digestion; therefore, wood is always recommended to keep them in optimum condition.<\/p>
Contrary to what others might tell you, they do not eat healthy plants. They may nibble algae off broader leaves, but they will only consume the plant itself if it is already dying. In those cases, it is actually beneficial, as it minimizes waste and helps the plant focus its energy on growing healthy new leaves rather than trying to repair dying ones.
